Brompton Bikes Tooling & Geomiq

Customer Success Story
November 18, 2020

“Geomiq have allowed us to be a little more creative with machining and ramp up production in London by producing more complex production line tooling for our factory floor”

Brompton rides into the electric future with Geomiq tooling up it’s factory floor at pace.

Stop-and-go cycling. Crowded public transport. Top-floor-apartment dwelling. It’s never easygetting around town. Brompton have been building their effortless folding bicycle in it’s London factory since 1975, with a design that has stood the test of time.

Brompton already converts nearly 45,000 city commuters and urban explorers each year to their fun and free approach to the daily grind and is the UK’s largest bike manufacturer.

“We have now ventured into producing an electric bike, offering the same build quality and efficiency associated with a Brompton. Geomiq has become a partner who can deliver quality machined parts at a short lead time, enabling Brompton to increase their manufacturing output by rapidly producing more tooling for our factory floor.”

Ravdeep Kalsi, Design Engineer

Brompton already converts nearly 45,000 city commuters and urban explorers each year to their fun and free approach to the daily grind and is the UK’s largest bike manufacturer.

The iconic folding bike goes electric with rapid and creative tooling.

Every Brompton is hand brazed by skilled craftsmen at their London Factory. It takes 18 months of training to earn the title and you’ll see a brazer’s signature stamped on the parts of the bike that they work on.

“Taking the products to manufacture requires tooling. Tooling is therefore designed in-house, sometimes manufactured and in cases where we don’t have capacity or the tooling is complex, Geomiq really have helped to make our designs come to life”

Ravdeep Kalsi, Design Engineer

As part of their partnership with Geomiq, Brompton decided to get imaginative with their tooling and equipment design.

“Previously we would design parts in-house and design to fit 3-axis machining” he added.

Now Brompton are able to utilise Geomiq 4- and 5-axis on-demand machining capacity to design and manufacture more complex tooling to build their folding bikes easier and faster.

Geomiq’s enables you to bring your products to market x4.5 faster

The Geomiq manufacturing platform has already proved to be a great enable for Brompton’s entire Tooling and Equipment team. “With Geomiq, we have a simple platform at our fingertips which enables us to get parts manufactured in a simple way.” said Rav.

With quotes in less than a day and precision CNC machined parts as fast as 5 days, Geomiq’s smart platform has brought Brompton’s production line tooling to factory floor faster than traditional manufacturing partners and at a reduced cost.

Building more bikes, safer and faster

During COVID-19, rapid and innovative tooling has enabled Brompton’s factory floor to build products safer and faster, whilst following strict government guidelines for social distancing as an essential UK manufacturer to meet the booming demand for bikes in our cities.

“We’re building nearly 2,000 bikes each month” said Rav. “And with so many unique parts and unique engineering solutions, we have had to produce over 500 different purpose-built press tools, moulds, braze jigs and assembly fixtures; all designed and developed in-house as well.”

“We have a number of suppliers we can use, however Geomiq have allowed us to avoid setbacks in production, as the best solution when we are up to in-house capacity.”

Rav added

Brompton now use Geomiq to build over 10 purpose built tools, jigs and fixtures a month to support their production line for their Classic, Electric and Superlight bicycles.

Live manufacturing capacity for rapid lead times and competitive pricing

Hold ups in production are disruptive for any business. By utilising available machine capacity across Geomiq’s network of carefully vetted and approved network of partners, 25 engineers and procurement specialists at Brompton have been able to access quick turn CNC and Sheet Metal parts since becoming a customer of Geomiq in 2018.

Each user has their own account and personalised dashboard to quote and order parts for their specific projects whilst having the full freedom to share quotes across their teams and build a catalogue of prices to seamlessly reorder again.

“By trialling parts out before placing larger orders enabled us to build trust in Geomiq, who we now see as one of our core manufacturing partners, also based in the Capital.”

Ravdeep Kalsi, Design Engineer
