What is MJF 3D printing?

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) is HP's powder bed fusion 3D printing technology that produces high-quality parts from thermoplastic powder. In MJF, a print head applies fusing and detailing agents to specific areas of the powder bed, which are then heated to fuse the material layer by layer. This unique approach enables MJF to create parts with excellent dimensional accuracy, good surface finishes, and consistent mechanical properties. MJF does not require support structures, allowing for intricate designs and consolidated assemblies. Its versatility makes it ideal for functional prototyping and short-run production.

MJF 3D printing finishing options

As-printed

The part is de-powdered and cleaned via air blasting, leaving a natural grainy texture. Depending on the material used, the finished product is typically grey or black.

Vapour smoothing

Parts are placed in a chamber with solvent vapour, which condenses to soften and smooth their surfaces. As it evaporates, a glossy, sealed finish forms, reducing surface roughness and enhancing appearance.

Vibro polishing

Finished parts are placed in a vibrating container filled with polishing media, such as ceramic or plastic beads. The continuous vibration gently abrades the parts' surfaces, reducing surface roughness and improving finish quality.

Dyeing

Parts are dyed by immersion in a warm colour bath. The dye penetrates the part’s surface to a depth of 0.25 mm to 0.5 mm. Available colours include black, blue, red, green, and yellow.

Custom

You can specify custom finishes such as painting and electroplating. Note that custom finishes require manual review and quoting and may be subject to approval.

FAQ MJF 3D printing service

  • What is MJF 3D printing?

MJF (Multi Jet Fusion) is an additive manufacturing process by HP that uses a print head to apply fusing and detailing agents onto a powdered material layer. Heat is then applied to fuse the powder, creating detailed, durable parts.

  • How does MJF 3D printing work?

In MJF, a print head deposits fusing and detailing agents on a powder layer based on the 3D model. A heating element fuses the selected areas, and the process repeats with each layer until the part is complete.

  • What are the advantages of using MJF 3D printing?

MJF produces parts with good surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and consistent mechanical properties. It’s ideal for creating complex, functional parts without support and is suited for both prototypes and small production runs.

  • What are MJF 3D printed parts used for?

MJF parts are widely used in industries like automotive, healthcare, and consumer goods for applications such as functional prototypes, end-use parts, and custom tools.

  • What materials can be used in MJF 3D printing?

MJF commonly uses nylon powders like PA12 and PA11, as well as glass-filled variants. These materials provide strength, durability, and resistance to heat and chemicals.
