CNC milling materials

    Post-processing and finishing options

CNC services: post-proccesing and finishing options

    As-machined

The most common CNC machining finish and all machining marks are visible on the material. This is the cheapest finishing option as there is no post-processing required. Roughness Average (Ra) values can be specified down to 0.2Ra in most cases.

    Polished

There are various Hand polishing is chosen when high cosmetic surfaces are required. The labour intensive method means that this is one of the most expensive options although. Some areas may not be accessible to polish.

    Bead blasted

Used to hide machining marks and sharp edges, creating an even texture on the outside surface of a part. Different grades of bead blasting are available, ranging from light dusting to a heavy blast that has heavy pitting by varying the bead size and blasting pressure.

    Feature image

    Electropolishing

Electropolishing is used to create shine and smooth the outside surface of a part by leveling any peaks or burrs. Electropolishing also increases corrosion resistance and can be done on most metals. Typically suited for parts less than 1m in length.

    Mirror Polishing

Mirror polishing is used to create a very high level of shine on typically large parts over 1m length. It is expensive and labour intensive.

    Vibratory Polishing

Vibratory Polishing or Tumbling is used to physically polish large quantities of metal or plastic parts automatically and quickly depending on the granules or chips used (media).

    Anodising

Anodising is the most popular surface treatment for Aluminium parts as it adds strength, corrosion resistance and enhances cosmetic appearance. A range of colours are available and thickness is typically 8μm-16μm depending on colour. Matte (<10GU) and Gloss levels (>20GU) can be specified also.

    Hard anodising

Hard Anodising is a high-performance surface treatment for Aluminium parts as it adds strength, corrosion resistance and enhances cosmetic appearance. Black and Natural (greyish) colours are available and thickness is 35μm-50μm depending on colour. Gloss levels cannot be specified.

    Plating

Plating is typically used to enhance appearance, improve corrosion resistance and improve conductivity. Typical thickness is dependant upon application but can vary from 1μm-20μm thick.

    Poweder coating

Powder coating is a method of painting that improves strength, corrosion resistance and enhances cosmetic appearance. A range of colours including RAL reference codes are available. Thickness is typically 50μm-150μm. Matte (<30GU) and Gloss levels (>70GU) can be specified also.

    Wet painting

Wet spray painting is often chosen to add a high cosmetic surface finish. It gives a smooth finish with varying gloss levels (>20GU) and can be highly polished with the addition of lacquer.

    Chrome plating

Chrome plating increases surface hardness, cosmetic appearance by adding a think layer of chromium that is shiney, as well as providing corrosion resistance. Thickness is typically between 0.1μm-10.5μm

    Nickel plating

Nickel plating increases cosmetic appearance by adding a think layer of chromium that is shiney, as well as providing additional corrosion and wear resistance. Thickness is typically between 2.5μm-150μm
